The Hopkins Hedge Mission statement
The Hopkins Hedge is a student-run investment fund that aims to teach financial literacy through investing. Through fundraising, the Hopkins Hedge's mission is to invest in the stock market through collaborative student efforts. To pursue our goal, the heads will work with new members to create investment strategies. In doing so, all members will gain experience researching markets as well as analyzing volatility, risk, portfolio construction, and expected returns. At bimonthly “proposal” meetings, club members have the opportunity to present research done on a stock and propose an investment strategy around their research. After internal discussions with members, Google Forms will be sent out to collectively decide on what proposals to implement. Proposals with two-thirds of the club's support will be passed.
The Hopkins Hedge also aims to strengthen the connection between Hopkins alumni and current Hopkins students. In order to start the fund, the Hopkins Hedge will be reliant on alumni donations. Our initial goal is to raise ten-thousand dollars to launch the fund through generous contributions. The Hopkins Hedge also hopes to connect with alumni by learning about their professional experiences and perspectives in the investment world. The club will host monthly meetings with guest speakers.
At the end of the school year, the after-tax profits from the fund will be assessed. Half of the profits will remain in the fund, ensuring growth and stability over the coming years. The remaining half of the profits will be liquidated and donated to the Hopkins School. The Hopkins Hedge hopes to both provide valuable investing experience to students and create financial benefits for the school.
Investing Protocol
- 1. Research/Analysis - Any member can choose to conduct research and analysis on potential investment opportunities and share their findings with the group via Google slideshow.
- 2. Group discussions - All members of the club will then participate in a group discussion, sharing their perspectives and opinions on the investments. These discussions will include risk factors, potential returns, and diversification.
- 3. Voting - After the group discussions, the proposals will be put to a vote, with each member having an equal say. A simple majority vote would be needed for the proposal to be accepted.
- 4. Investing - Once being accepted, the club would invest a predetermined amount of money into the stock. The club will then continue to track the progress of the stock having future discussions on considering holding or selling.
What Is The Goal?
We hope that our club is able to raise money, facilitate discussions and growth among students at Hopkins, and bring in guest speakers to talk to the club so the students can gain further knowledge about professional experiences. We want to create a safe atmosphere for people to learn about topics ranging from biomedical investing to technological developments.
